I love St. Louis every time I get there. Why?? Because of the atmosphere, the great people and the history. St. Louis is very old, has much history, and is very upbeat and progressive. Here you will find the old blended with the new to a seemingly perfect execution. This city has character. It has great beauty and in the Spring and Summer, is gorgeous. The MO Botanical Gardens are always a favorite. The STL zoo if great and free too! Forest Park in the Summer is quite a place to be, and the Science Center is awesome. The Hill has the best Italian food outside of Italy, and Westport, Laclede's Landing, and Manchester has better clubs than Chicago. The Central West End and the Cathedral are not to be missed.

Established as a French trading post in 1764, St. Louis served as a gateway to the west after the Louisiana Purchase and as a major port for steamboats traveling the Mississippi. Today the city's landmark is the soaring, shining steel Gateway Arch, designed by Eero Saarinen in 1966 to commemorate western-bound pioneers. Though visitors often make it their first stop, there's plenty more beckoning, including the restored Union Station, first-rate museums, and numerous attractions geared toward children, many of them free, making St. Louis a prime family destination.

You’ve got to love a free zoo, especially a world-class zoo like this one! When I first heard that this was a free zoo, I pictured a small zoo with small cages and just a few animals. I was wrong. The St Louis Zoo is really impressive. There are over 6000 animals here, some I had never heard of or seen before - and I’m a Biologist! The exhibits are well designed and the animals have a lot of room to move around. For visitors, this translates to lots of animal action! If you like zoos, this is one worth visiting.

Explore the Meramec Caverns

Explore the Meramec Caverns
Take a guided tour past jewel-like mineral formations at Meramec Caverns, the oldest attraction on Route 66 in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains southwest of St. Louis. After the cave sheltered Native American tribes the French colonial miners and Civil War garrisons used the cave’s natural minerals to manufacture gunpowder, and outlaw Jesse James is said to have hidden both men and horses in the dark passages in the 1870s. Legend also says the cave was a stop on the Underground Railroad for escaping slaves. Don’t miss the Stage Curtain, the largest single cave formation in the world, and the Underground River.
